When it comes to batteries and the technology available for them these days, the ones made from Lithium are most popular, thanks to their high energy efficiency. Out of all the metals, lithium is the one with the best energy density, plus it’s also the one that is lightest. If lithium wouldn’t be available as a material for battery manufacturing, the latest wave of electric cars that are highly efficient wouldn’t be possible, at least not right now.
There is an increasing demand for batteries based on Lithium Ion, mostly because our use of technology increases constantly, and every electrical device has to be able to hold some sort of electric charge. Using very long cords to reach a power outlet isn’t really a good idea when it comes to cars, so using batteries to store that energy should be the obvious choice in cases like this. The same can be said about mobile phones or tablets, among many other gadgets, all devices that require a good battery in order to give the user true mobility.
There are a number of reasons why the Lithium based battery is so often found these days and you can find a few of them below.
First of all, Lithium is a cheap enough metal, to make it worth using. The cost is a major issue with many sources of alternative fuel, at least until they will be used often enough to get the price down. Until then, fuels that are based on fossils will be the ones that are cheapest, so until they run out there isn’t a very good chance that they’ll be replaced. The nice thing about Lithium is that this cheap material will remain so for a long time. There is a lot more of it being made than is needed right now, and even if the demand increases, the production will still be plenty.
Lithium mining is at its beginnings, so there are huge reserves of this metal waiting to be discovered and mined. There is a lot of Lithium that isn’t hard to mine, with reserves that are just beginning to be drawn upon, so there is plenty to go around for the foreseeable future. The result is a low cost for Lithium based batteries, since the base product used in the manufacturing is a cheap one. Even Lithium might be a rapidly decreasing source at some point, but for now, there is plenty of it.
One great thing about lithium is that this is a green energy supply, since there are no emissions being produced during its use. Lithium based batteries don’t give out any kind of emission, so they’re perfectly safe to use. Once you’re done with them, you can recycle the batteries easily, so they will not pollute the environment with the acid that is found inside.
Even the mining of lithium can be considered green, at least when you compare it with the other kind of metal mining. The main chemical which is used as part of the mining is water.
