Toshiba NB505-N508BN Netbook Review

The NB505 is an entry level netbook from Toshiba. Whilst Toshiba aren’t the best loved or most well respected computer manufacturer, they aren’t without their good points. If you’re looking for a netbook on a budget, the NB505’s low price point will almost certainly be a draw. But is the Toshiba NB505 worth buying? Let’s have a look at some of its weaknesses.

Toshiba NB505: The Pros

Full Size Keyboard: Probably the best feature of this netbook, boring as it might seem, is its keyboard. While this isn’t exactly the most glamorous of product features, one of the biggest complaints users have of netbooks is the size of the keyboard.

A smaller than standard keyboard has two primary problems. Firstly, it can be uncomfortable during prolonged use. If you intend to use your netbook for work, and write lots of emails or do other kinds of word processing, using a small keyboard can really take its toll on your fingers after a while. This is especially true if you have large hands!

The other problem with small keyboards is that they can cause you to make a larger number of errors when typing. Not only do you have to adjust to the different spacing of the keys at first, but even someone familiar with a small keyboard can trip up over their own fingers when typing at a high speed.

If you struggle with typing as it is, or don’t want the discomfort or awkwardness that smaller keyboards can result in, then the NB505 will fit you well.

Battery Life: All portable devices benefit from long battery life. If you intend to take your netbook out and about with you then it’s almost essential to have batteries that last. There’s nothing more frustrating than finding that your netbook has run out of battery the next time you turn it on, especially if you’re using it for work purposes.

The battery on the NB505 isn’t the best of all the netbooks, but it does hang in for longer than average. Given the low price point of this netbook, you can’t expect top-end specs, but the NB505 will meet the casual user’s battery needs.

Bloatware: If you’re not familiar with this term, it refers to software that is pre-installed on your device before you buy it by the manufacturer. In most cases, bloatware is almost useless. Not only that, but bloatware programs often run in the background and start-up automatically, which means your machine may not run at optimum speeds. As a result, users usually have to uninstall bloatware when they first get their machines, which is both annoying and time-consuming.

The Toshiba NB505 is better than many of its rivals in this respect, coming with relatively little bloatware. This will save a lot of frustration, especially for users who aren’t all that tech-savvy.

Design: The NB505 has a pretty nice design. It’s certainly not a masterpiece, and nor could you call it glamorous. However, it does look professional with its simple and minimal style.

250GB Hard Drive: Not all netbooks have much storage space. This isn’t a problem if you only really use your netbook for web browsing and word processing, but if you want to keep lots of images, videos, or music files on your computer, smaller hard drives can fill up quickly.

The 250GB hard drive on the NB505 is larger than many of its rivals. It’ll certainly last a while, even if you do plan to store lots of large files on it.

Toshiba NB505: The Cons

1GB RAM: As with some other netbooks, this one comes with only 1GB of RAM. Low amounts of RAM have a direct impact on a computer’s performance. If you want to browse the web, listen to music and view photos all at once then your computer will almost certainly start to struggle with only 1GB of RAM.

Of course, it’s possible to upgrade the NB505 to 2GB of RAM. This will certainly improve performance significantly. Unfortunately, however, this laptop comes in 2 slightly different models. One of them uses DDR2 RAM, the other uses DDR3 RAM. Before you can buy a RAM upgrade for your machine, you first have to check which kind of RAM it’s using.

This is unusual for netbooks, and is certainly a lot of hassle. Memory upgrading should be kept as simple as possible (or better still netbooks would could with the maximum amount of RAM included). It’s a shame that Toshiba made this more complicated than it has to be.

Trackpad: The trackpad on the NB505 is a bit sensitive, which might be annoying for some. Sensitive trackpads can make it hard to control the cursor properly and difficult to click.

Reliability: Easily the biggest issue with the Toshiba NB505 is reliability. Many users report having technical issues with this netbook anywhere from a couple of months to a year after buying the product. This is fine if the product is still in warranty, but if your year is up then you may have to pay a lot for repairs.

Is The Toshiba NB505 Worth Buying?

While there are quite a few good points about the NB505, overall it’s a fairly average machine. It is cheap though, one of the cheapest machines in the netbook category. The price is certainly a draw, and will be especially handy if you’re on a tight budget, but the reliability issues of this machine do make it hard to outright recommend. Buy this machine if you’re looking to keep on a budget and don’t mind taking a risk on reliability. Otherwise, you should look at alternatives first.
